Design Brief (Pictographic Narrative)
Company profile
Our company is called Splendid Inc. We’re a small organisation, meaning more team effort and enthusiasm is shared between us, due to our close relationships. It’s because of this enthusiasm that we’ve chosen to create a range of toys for young children. We usually make miscellaneous ‘toys’ for an older audience. However, our products had been failing to appeal to this previous target audience. We’ve temporarily gone out of business, and would like to start a new range of advertising to create a new image on the market.
Splendid Inc. may have a limited amount of members, but we’re so determined and capable of creating any masterpiece for our new target audience. We need to get the word around that Splendid Inc. is taking a new turn, and will produce top quality products. In order to do this, we would like to have a series of advertisements on TV, newspapers, billboards, posters, etc. that show various stories about children becoming happy after purchasing a Splendid Inc. toy.
Market position
On today’s children’s market, we’ll be competing against names such as Toys-R-Us, Mattel and Meccano. We want parents to realise our loyalty and great craftwork compared to these other companies. At our business, we mean business! We want to put a smile on everybody’s face – especially the children’s faces. With money-back guarantees and bargains all year round, we’re hoping the parents will also smile, and see us as trustworthy as well as a fun loving brand. We know with our friendly and caring staff, we’ll be able to stand out for sure, however, we need to get the word out first.
Target audience
Our primary audience is Australian children, boys and girls aged between 2-8 years, located in Victoria. We will base most of our products on how this younger audience will receive our messages, in order to help them learn various things, such as counting, colouring, etc.
Your aims and objectives
Splendid Inc. would like to attract a totally younger audience, as we will want to teach them with our educational range of toys. We of course would also like to generate profits, as it is our business and with more money, we’ll be able to make better toys and products.
The message
We want to have both parents and children satisfied with the product they’ve just purchased from us. We want them to know they can bring the toy back if need be, and we’ll be totally understanding. We want to build mutual relationships with our customers.
We want to use a similar format/design to this one. It’s clear, easy for young children to understand. But with coloured blocks instead of plain black in order to be more fun and appealing.
Using this method, we could take photos of children losing/breaking their old toys, walking down the street, buying our products, and smiling after, etc.
Hans Christian Andersen Storyboard
I took a bunch of story titles written by Hans Christian Andersen, and linked them together into my own story. I focused more on the creativity of piecing the stories together, rather than to have 'absolutely amazing' pictures, since HCA was known for his stories - not the pictures that went with them!
I would like to have a voiceover reading each sentence out loud (for children who can't read) , and have each letter appear one and a time on the screen, to make it appear as though someone's writing it out, and also have the pictures literally 'sketched' on the screen, as though a little kid drew them.
I went for a grey background to portray the olden days, when he wrote the stories.
I used bright, bold colours to attract young children, and the twist on the stories to attract a slightly older/more mature audience of up to 15yrs.
I made this with the thought of a TV advertisement, not so much a title sequence,,,

I did this in Photoshop, following the instructions given.
I struggled with a few elements of the task, but found a way around them still giving the same effect.
Tough Love
I followed the guidelines given and created this from scratch in Adobe Illustrator.
I then changed the colours, added text and altered the composition slightly to add a personal touch to the overall product.
I hope you like tough love... Peita style!

Illustration with a Conscience
This is the Say "No" to Drugs poster I used to appeal to teenage girls. I used the well known convention of using the colour pink to do this.
I figured, as girls are (in general) a lot more deep and emotional, I focused on the eyes of the girl (friend of the subject), attempting a smile, but showing how miserable and sorry she is.
I used a fictional scenario where a girl's reputation is ruined as bad photos of her are all over the internet, when she's under the infuence of drugs, which I think will effect girls more than if the subject had died. Because she's still alive and having to face this horrible social crisis everyday.
If I were to make more posters on this issue, I'd use similar angled photos and have a consistent pink tear drop (or vary in colour, but it would still be there) on each person in the poster.
Illustration with a Conscience
This is the Say "No" to Drugs poster I made for a target audience of teenage boys.
Not only did I use a cartoon atmosphere in attempt to attract my audience, I tried to create a world out of this world.
I decided to make this "whole new world," as Johnny (the subject) said, stand out compared to Johnny's picture, who had apparently been faded out from this world, to depict he's died.
My logic behind the different texts was that the quote by the subject was full of character and enthusiasm - also contrasting his picture (difference between life and death) - and then constrasting the subject's friend who was quoting him, whose text is also in black and white. I tried to portray this as the friend (representing all the people in the subject's life) as having the life sucked out of them, now their friend's dead.
This is a photo I took of my friend, and all quotes and other text are made up by me. This is a fictional, but very possible, scenario, and I want to warn my audience it can happen to anyone, including them.
